A sad sight

There they sit.Forlorn,unloved,unused.Victims of the nanny state and it's ridiculous helmet laws. We'll provide the bike. You supply the helmet and then we'll send you on your way, to take a chance on our unsegregated, on road bike lanes.

Wow, even adults are required to wear a helmet? Here in California it is just kids. I don't know at what age kids are allowed to go without. I've always thought the helmet law we and some other states instituted for motorcycles was silly enough, but this that you have to contend with is going too far. Neat photo the bottom one, but sad as you put it.

Hello Cpt Sinbad and You OTL.Hilariously, when bicycle helmets were first introduced to Australia there was a serious push to do the same for car drivers. The company pushing them nearly had the government onside and I can remember seeing people driving thier cars with helmets fixed firmly in place. Happily, commonsense won the day. Just recently, there has been a renewed push to have cyclists wear fluoro vests at night.Welcome to the nanny state!

It's just not going to work long-term is it? Such an awful shame because I love the idea of a successful bike scheme . . . and you're right. The helmet law has a big part to play in the inevitable flop! Sigh.

BB: I feel a mixture of frustration and depression when I compare our bike share scheme to those over seas.Don't even get me started on the state of our trains and trams!
