Clobber~Helly Hansen

Obsession.I can tell you exactly when it began.Over 30 years ago I sailed on a ship called the Iron Capricorn. She was a modern ship for her time and had been bareboat chartered from a Norwegian shipowner called Christian Jebsen. Everyone on board had been kitted out in this beautiful wet weather gear from a little known, exotically named company called Helly Hansen.Anyway, the years passed, and I never heard of them again. Then,10 years ago, they suddenly became trendy.Very trendy, and expensive, amongst the snow boarding and yachting set.I suspect that Helly Hansen are now in a similar marketing situation to Blundstone/ King Gee.Everyday, ho hum at home, exotic abroad.Any Norwegians out there?

Anyway,it was time for my old grease stained jacket to visit the wheely bin, and thanks to the super strong ozz dollar, I purchased this beautiful, light weight, HH rain jacket. It's very definitely not cycling specific. But it does have zippered vents under the arms and really useful rain proof pockets. It bucketed down all the way home tonight. Verdict. Top half totally dry.(forgot to pack the wp pants) 5 stars.
And the Iron Capricorn? She's razor blades now, ending her life on a beach in Chittagong.Just a faded piece of nostalgia in the minds of a few old sailors.

Nice post and interesting to read. I like the term "wheely bin". You can be assured that I'll use that from now on. We still call them 'trash can' here in the states and they haven't been a can or made of metal in decades.

Definitely looks more upmarket than my old Rainbird (although the jacket and pants have kept me dry all year so I shouldn't knock them). Lovely colour choice, safety-wise and mood-wise, for a drab, wet day. Of course, the burning question is, "Do they do a matching dog jacket for Waffles?" :)

Cool post, ya! I still like my Blundstones, even if they are only ordinary in Oz. This is especially important to me, when most of the stuff is made very cheaply.

I enjoyed learning some new terminology and some "insider" info.

Peace :)

Hi Sinbad A.Y.O.T.L. Thanks to the ever shrinking world,'Dude','fender' and 'yo'! have become every day expressions here in Ozz. Please feel free to use and propagate 'wheely bin','treadlie (bicycle) and bloke (dude)!!

That's a good question BB. The dollar has already started to drop but I'll be checking the pants. Funny,it's been so dry over here for years I had forgotten the importance of good WW gear.(sorry about the gratuitous k9 shot!)

Hey there Chandra. Similarly,Ugg boots are considered to be quite 'naff' here in Australia where in the US they are trendy.I have no idea why! BTW,Blunnies are now produced off shore in Malaysia.

Definitely clobber.

Nice shot Waffles.

And, I refuse to accept that Blunnies are naff.

Also, word verification is "squal". Quite appropriate I think.

ahoy there Ms Herder.Blunnies are very definitely not naff! ever. But Ugg boots? yup, I put them in the same boat as sheep skin mocassins!!
