'melted like a chocolate in my palm'

There's no  easy way to remove these old style cottered cranks .I suspect they heated the crank before inserting the cotter pin because it NEVER ,EVER just taps out.In lieu of a blow torch, the old angle grinder becomes the back yard mechanic's best friend.I'm not really one for historically authentic rebuilds.I always thought these old crank sets were ugly and heavy .Much the better to replace with some elegant light weight Sugino cranks all linked together with a cartridge bottom bracket and Phil French threaded rings.(of which more in a later post)
